Opiod Overdose Prevention
Point on the Mountain, Inc. has always educated its participants about opioid overdose prevention. For example, in 2016 we began an overdose prevention education campaign with the support of the Open Society Foundation to conduct educational events directly in the community on how to reduce the risk of an overdose and respond effectively to an emergency. However, by February 2017 we were facing an alarming rise in the incidence of opioid overdose deaths in our region that coincided with the arrival of fentanyl on the island. We have lost participants who knew how to prevent and respond to overdoses due to the surprise of this new substance in the merchandise available to people who inject drugs (PWID) who participate in our services.
Since 2017 we have focused on educating about the presence of fentanyl, how to
prevent an opioid overdose using harm reduction strategies, and how to
respond to an opioid overdose using NARCAN/Naloxone. We have advocated for the
availability of Naloxone to nonprofits like ours and participating
participants. As part of our work we have used the “Flooding the Zone”
strategy to make Naloxone available to PWID in our region free and continuous.
